As the largest purchaser of goods and services in the world, the U.S. government can be one of your best customers. According to the SBA, over $500 billion in contracts are awarded each year, with at least 23% of these awarded to small businesses. There are specific mandated goals for federal agencies to do business with small disadvantaged businesses (51% owned by one or more persons that are socially and economically disadvantaged), women owned small businesses, service-disabled veteran owned small businesses and small businesses located in underutilized business zones (Hub Zones).
Opportunities can be found at Fed Biz Opps.Gov which lists thousands of active opportunities. To get started you must register as a Federal Contractor and obtain a D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet and then register with the System of Award Management. The SBA’s 8a Business Development Program helps small disadvantaged businesses in the marketplace and has a Mentor –Protégé program to provide greater assistance.
